Understanding HbA1c: What Your Diabetes Test Really Means

HbA1c, or glycosylated hemoglobin, gives your doctor a snapshot of your average blood sugar levels over the past 2–3 months. Unlike a fasting glucose test which is a single point in time, HbA1c reflects long-term trends.

A value below 5.7% is considered normal, 5.7–6.4% signals prediabetes, and 6.5% or higher generally confirms diabetes. Understanding where you fall helps you and your physician build a management plan.

For patients already managing diabetes, tracking HbA1c every 3–6 months is standard practice. It helps evaluate whether current medications, diet, and exercise are working effectively.

At Aakash Pathology Laboratory, HbA1c testing is available as a standalone test or as part of our Diabetes Profile packages, with reports typically ready within 24 hours.
